Honda S2000 immobilizer system applies to 1999-2003 models.
The vehicle is equipped with an immobilizer system that will disable the vehicle unless the proper ignition key is used. This system consists of a transponder located in the ignition key, an immobilizer receiver unit, an indicator light, and the ECM.
The vehicle has two kinds of keys.
- The black master key for:
- ignition switch.
- door locks.
- trunk lock.
- The gray valet key for:
- ignition switch.
- door locks.
When the key is inserted in the ignition switch and turned to the (II) position, the immobilizer receiver unit sends power to the transponder in the ignition key. The transponder then sends a coded signal back through the immobilizer receiver unit to the ECM.
- The immobilizer system can store up to six key codes.
- If it is necessary to rewrite the ECM, the dealer needs the customer’s vehicle, all its master keys and valet keys, and the HDS equipped with an immobilizer program card with the latest version of HDS software. Any key that is not learned during rewriting will no longer start the engine, except keys duplicated with the Ilco Code Key Duplicator.
- If the customer has lost his key, and cannot start the engine, contact Honda Customer Relations.
- It is possible to add ONE new key without reprogramming all of the keys (follow the prompts in the HDS IMMOBI menu).
- If the proper key has been used, the immobilizer indicator light will come on for about 2 seconds, then go off.
- If the wrong key has been used or the code was not received or recognized by the ECM, the indicator light will come on for about 2 seconds, then it will blink until the ignition switch is turned OFF. For accurate immobilizer system diagnosis, get as much information from the customer as possible. A blinking indicator light means the key was not recognized.
- If the ignition switch is turned OFF, the indicator will blink for about 5 seconds to signal that the immobilizer system has been set correctly, then the indicator will go off.
Large metal objects, key fobs, other immobilizer keys, and other transponders can interfere with the immobilizer signal. If an intermittent problem is suspected, remove the ignition key from the key ring.
Follow this procedure if the vehicle does not start, or after rewriting the ECM with the HDS and the vehicle does not start.
NOTE THESE ITEMS BEFORE TROUBLESHOOTING:
- Due to the action of the immobilizer system, the engine takes slightly more time to start than a vehicle without an immobilizer system.
- When the system is normal, and the proper key is inserted, the indicator light comes on for 2 seconds, then it will go off.
- If the indicator starts to blink after 2 seconds, or if the engine does not start, repeat the starting procedure. If the engine still does not start, troubleshoot the system.
1. Using a scan tool, check for a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
Is DTC P1607 indicated?
YES: Replace the ECM
NO: Go to step 2
2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II) with the proper key.
3. Check to see if the immobilizer indicator light comes on.
Does the indicator light blink?
YES: Go to step 4
NO: Check for these problems:
- an open in the PNK wire between the gauge assembly and ECM
- a faulty immobilizer indicator light
4. Disconnect the 5P connector from the immobilizer receiver unit.
5. Check for voltage between the No. 1 terminal and body ground with the ignition switch turned ON (II).
Is there battery voltage?
NO: Check for these problems:
- a blown No. 2 (15A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.
- a blown No. 46 (15A) fuse in the main under-hood fuse/relay box.
- an open in the YEL/BLK wire between the PGM-FI main relay and immobilizer receiver unit.
- a faulty PGM-FI main relay.
6. Check for continuity between the No. 4 terminal and body ground.
Is there continuity?
NO: Repair open in the BRN wire between the immobilizer receiver unit and G101
Is there continuity?
NO: Repair open in the RED/BLU wire between the immobilizer unit and ECM.
Is there continuity?
NO: Repair open in the PNK/BLU wire between the immobilizer unit and ECM.
2. Disconnect the 5P connector from the immobilizer receiver unit.

3. Disconnect the 7P connector from the ignition key switch.
4. Remove the four screws, and remove the immobilizer receiver unit from the ignition key cylinder.
5. Install in the reverse order of removal.
6. After replacement, make sure the immobilizer indicator light blinks correctly.
The ECM does not need to be reprogrammed if only the receiver has been replaced.

i have a 2003 honda accord the starter would crank normal, but the car wont start. i also have a green key light keep blinking plz tell me what is my problem. i had a locks smith came to program my key, the light came off but when he turn it off and turn it back on the key light started blinking again
Sounds like your key isn’t getting proper coded so when you try to crank the car your immobilizer system doesn’t recognize it. Thus the car won’t start. Your best bet is to have the dealership recode the key. Good luck.
would i need a new immobilizer or just let them recode the key?
I’d say let the dealership recode the key first. Getting a whole new immobilizer system may be costly.
what if when i look in the engine computer isaw errosion does this means i need a new computer
Hard to say unless it got inside the control unit. I’d have to say get the key reprogrammed first and see if you can start your car. If so then the control unit is fine. Usually the control unit is sealed pretty tight.
i’m gettin frustrated now because i had a locksmith changed the immobilizer and reprogram the key but the light still blinking he say it may be the engine computer because it ain reading the key
Have you tried resetting the ECU and see if it does anything? Sometimes I’ll call the local dealership and talk to the service department if I can’t figure out. They usually provide some good info.
i had the computer changed and now the check engine light, the oil , and the battery light came on i also hear the fuel pump when i turn the ignition. but the only thing is that the key light is still blinking do i have the get the key program to the new computer and will it start then?
I did some digging around online and you can get some answers here:

But I’d have to say if your going to get the keyword reprogrammed then at least have the dealership do it. Good luck.
what does this means? numbers of keys 1, ecm and pcm not registering 50-12
Sounds like an error code. You may get an answer over at Honda-tech.com, if not then give your local dealership a call. They usually provide some good info over the phone.
