Automatic Transmission Removing and Installing – Civic ’92-95

by NinjaX on June 20, 2010

Automatic transmission removing and installing applies to Honda Civic models between 1992-1995.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative and then positive battery cables, and remove battery. Remove intake hose band bolt from throttle body. Remove complete air cleaner assembly with intake hose.
  2. Remove tranny ground cables. Disconnect wire connector from lock-up control solenoid valve. Disconnect speedometer sensor connector. Remove tranny housing mounting bolts and rear engine mounting bolt.
  3. Remove transmission drain plug and drain fluid (remove fill plug to speed draining). Install drain plug and NEW washer. Tighten plug to specification. Remove splash shields from bottom of engine and from right wheelwell.
  4. Remove front exhaust header pipe and bracket. Remove cotter pin and remove lower control arm ball joint nut. Separate ball joint from lower control arm. Remove shock strut damper fork bolt and separate strut damper from fork. Remove right radius rod bolts and nut at opposite end of rod. Remove right radius rod. When removing CV joint and drive axle assembly from transmission, DO NOT pull on drive axle or knuckle. Inboard CV joint may separate. Pull on inboard joint.
  5. Using 2 large screwdrivers, pry inboard CV joints from tranny. Remove or support shafts aside. Protect inner CV joint spline from contamination by covering drive axle end by covering it with a plastic bag. Remove header pipe bracket, torque converter cover and shift control cable holder. Remove stopper mount. Disconnect cooler hoses at joint pipes. Using wire, support hoses aside. Remove shift control cable cover. Remove shift control cable end by removing cotter pin, control pin and control lever roller. Using wire, support cable aside.
  6. Loosen lower throttle cable lock nut. Disconnect and remove throttle control cable from tranny throttle lever. Remove front and rear engine stiffeners. Only Civic Del Sol with B16A3 engine uses a rear stiffener. Remove torque converter cover plate. Manually turn crankshaft pulley clockwise to access and remove 8 torque converter mounting bolts from torque converter drive plate.
  7. Using engine hoist or an appropriate engine support fixture, relieve weight of engine from mounts. Support transmission using tranny jack and raise it slightly. Remove front and side mount bolts. Remove engine mounting bolts.
  8. Remove all transaxle mounting bolts. Pull transaxle away from engine until it clears 14-mm guide pins on engine. Lower transaxle assembly from vehicle. Ensure torque converter remains with transaxle.

Installing

  1. To install tranny, reverse removal procedure. Inspect drive plate for cracks, elongated holes and warpage. Replace drive plate if necessary. Replace distributor “O” ring.
  2. Replace 26-mm spring clips on end of each inboard CV joint splined shaft. Check shift control cable and throttle control cable operation. Adjust cables as necessary.
